Worth Matravers Parish Council

A small but active community in the north of Anglesey, Llanfechell Community Council already had a play area along the Brynddu Road at the village entrance, but wanted to revitalise it with modern equipment. The aim was to create a more engaging space for all ages, including a dedicated toddler area that offered safety and independence while keeping older children catered for with more thrilling play opportunities. Amlwch has historical and community significance in this part of Wales, and the new playground needed to be as worthy of the space as the numerous prehistoric and cultural landmarks of the area.
Serving a population of just over a thousand, Llanfechell is the largest village in the Mechell community area, near Amlwch on Ynys Môn (Anglesey). Its easily accessible play area is popular with local families and visitors from across the island but had begun to look dated, limiting its impact as a valued space for recreation and socialising. The Community Council supports residents by initiating and funding projects like this, ensuring improved facilities and a stronger sense of community. While planning the full refresh, they took the opportunity to redesign the layout, introducing equipment for both toddlers and older children so families could enjoy the space together.
The play equipment was designed and developed in collaboration with local residents and ward councillors to maximise fun and engagement for children and meet the needs of local families.
The site had been filled with outdated equipment, which was removed to make way for a complete transformation. To provide excitement for older children, a selection of swings was installed, including a basket swing that encourages social and inclusive play. The new play equipment also features slides and climbing frames, offering a diverse range of options for children. The different areas within the playground are set up for various age groups, ensuring that each zone is tailored to the needs and safety of its users. A Jungle Climber adds the kind of complex movement challenges that keep older children engaged, while a zip wire introduces a sense of thrill and grandeur to what is otherwise a modest village space. With so many fast-paced pieces now in use, the decision was made to create a fenced corner area specifically for younger children — offering them a safe space to play without crossing paths with the more energetic older group.
The centrepiece of the new playground is a bright red tractor – a fitting choice for the agricultural area and a firm favourite with children of all ages, inspiring endless imaginative play. There was also room for one of our most popular products, the DART Activity Centre, whose slide, tyres, and bridge complete the playground by ensuring every type of play experience is covered. A Helvellyn Play Tower proudly welcomes younger children into the toddler area, where they can also enjoy an age-appropriate swing and two themed springers – a rabbit and a dragon – reflecting the site’s rural character and Welsh heritage.
By the time a striking ‘blue river’ of wetpour safety surfacing had been laid, the installation was completed in just three weeks. The project was signed off by an RPII-qualified inspector, confirming full compliance with BSEN 1176 and 1177 safety standards – a reflection of Creative Play’s commitment to quality, safety, and efficiency on the project.
Ample parking makes the playground a popular destination for families. As part of a network of community playgrounds and parks in the area, it offers a welcoming space for all ages. The new layout provides a dedicated toddler area alongside equipment for older children, so everyone can play together. Toddlers build confidence and decision-making skills on the age-appropriate play tower or enjoy gentle movement on a springer, while older children can tackle more challenging, exciting equipment – both finally having their own space to play.
The playground project is considered a significant victory for the community and is widely regarded as a major achievement after years of effort, with further developments planned for the future.
