Clockwork Day Nursery

THE BRIEF

With Clockwork Day Nurseries opening day quickly approaching, the final part of the development, the outdoor play area, still needed to be addressed. The Nursery contacted Creative Play with a wish list already in mind. Looking to incorporate a roadway, balance/climbing, role play, sand and water features as well as mounds and tunnels to the area we knew we would be able to help!

THE DESIGN

With the brief we were given we were extremely excited to be part of such a great transformation. We designed the facility to include a range of early year’s playground equipment such as an outdoor sail shade, sandbox, mound tunnels, crawling tube, tower system, custom made water feature and playhouse; everything the Clockwork Day Nursery had asked for.

In addition to all of the equipment Wetpour Safety Surfacing and Artificial Grass Safety Surfacing were laid to allow all-weather use and ensure the play area meets all BSEN 1176/1177 standards. Within the Wetpour Safety Surfacing we also incorporated the requested roadway to provide more role play elements.

Northumbria University Nursery

THE BRIEF

A two stage development, staff at Northumbria University Nursery wanted to create two play spaces, each with its own play tower as the focal point, that focused on the development of fundamental movement skills and encouraged physical play. As always, we were happy to assist.

THE DESIGN

As the first area was smaller, we were really able to make the most out of the space by custom creating their Jigsaw Play Tower to pack in lots of exciting play features into a compact design. Again for the second area, a Jigsaw Play Tower acted as the main focal point, this time without roofed platforms, whilst additional play equipment was added to utilise the larger area available. Items such as our Timber Playhouse is great for den-making but can also be used to store trikes when not in use. A number of our Toddle Town play items were also added, such as our Balance Bar, Timber Bridge and Balance Beam, to allow the children to develop their balance and co-ordination skills.
Across both areas, green and black fleck Wetpour was used to ensure all BSEN 1176 & 1177 safety requirements were met.

Busy Bees Croydon

ABOUT

Our impressive development at Busy Bees Croydon is all about combining physical play opportunities with open-ended imaginative play elements. A bespoke 2 tower Jigsaw play structure and outdoor shelter act as the main focal points in the playground, whilst pieces such as our Timber Bridge, Timber Crawl Tunnel and Timber Playhouse – Construction Zone  are all about providing discovery and exploration opportunities.

Our Wetpour Safety Surfacing acts as a great all-weather base that ensures all BSEN 1176 & 1177 standards are met; better still we incorporated a roadway design into the surfacing itself to incorporate a further play feature.

Sheffield High School/ Ashdell Prep

THE BRIEF

With the merger of Ashdell Prep with Sheffield High School, it was agreed between the sites that two play areas at Ashdell Prep should be completely rejuvenated before the new school year starts in September. The brief was simple: to introduce a lot more colour through the incorporation of play equipment & safety surfacing.

THE DESIGN

For this project we knew the customers wanted to add some serious colour to their outdoor play spaces so we really went for it! Vibrant play pieces such as our First Mate pirate ship and Carousel Mini not only have a lot of colour, but they also provide lots of play features such as slides, climbing panels and crawling tunnels; ideal for promoting physical play and developing fundamental movement skills. Smaller items such as Playboards, a storytelling area, Sandbox, Water Wall and bespoke playhouse were also added to provide a wider variety of play opportunities. Our Wetpour Safety Surfacing was used throughout both areas to again add colour but to also ensure all British and European safety standards would be met. We used a number of bright colours and even integrated designs such as hopscotches, mirror me stations and roadways to provide even more play opportunities.

Trinity Oaks C of E Primary School

THE BRIEF

Trinity Oaks C of E Primary School is a reasonably new school; only opening in September 2014. This meant the school didn’t really have a play facility for the children and with new KS2 pupils due to start soon, they wanted to add a play area before they started. Overall, the school wanted to incorporate a climbing frame and a shelter area as a minimum.

THE DESIGN

The development area at Trinity Oaks C of E Primary school was pretty much a blank canvas, ready for a complete transformation. We decided to add one of our Jigsaw Play Towers to add the ultimate one-stop play structure. Alongside this, we added our Octavia Shelter, a Timber Cabin, two pieces of our popular Trim Trail range; our Jelly Board and Moving Beam, to add even more play options. Thermoplastic playground markings were also included to allow for ball games. Overall, we managed to meet all of the requirements requested by the school, and more!
To ensure the playground met all of the BSEN 1176/1177 safety standards required, we laid our Wetpour Safety Surfacing, in blue and green, under the Jigsaw Play Tower and Timber Cabin; this also added a nice splash of colour to the existing tarmac area.

THE DESIGN

Due to the scale of the Sherfield’s development, we knew we wanted to incorporate a variety of impressive play equipment to really utilise the space on offer. Our Adventure Trail 16 is a ready made circuit ideal for encouraging physical play and developing fundamental movements skills, while our vibrant Mini Train and Teepee playhouse meets the role play elements requested in Sherfield’s brief. Sensory play items such as our Water Wall -EYFS, Mud Kitchen Midi & Digging Planter Miniature Garden are fantastic for encouraging children to discover & explore during play and are always popular in both Early Years & KS1 settings. A combination of Wetpour and Rubber Mulch Safety Surfacing was used throughout to provide all-weather play surfaces as well as to ensure all BSEN 1176 and 1177 safety requirements were met.

THE BRIEF

Wanting to transform their existing EYFS tarmac play area, Willow Green Academy got in touch with Creative Play. During their consultation it became apparent that they wanted to include a mixture of play surfaces as well as incorporate a main climbing tower, sensory items and imaginative play equipment. Being such a large development, we were excited to get started!

THE DESIGN

With so many wants we really wanted to make sure we met, and exceeded, all of Willow Green’s expectations. Firstly, we included classic sensory play items such as our Water Wall – EYFS and new Messy Play Tables whilst for the main climbing tower we created a custom Jigsaw Tower with a slide, V-Bridge and Net Climber. Den-Making Teepees & Weaving Beams were added to spark imaginations and our Half Octavia Shelter creates a great outdoor classroom. We also added a Timber Combi Goal with two Timber Kickboards to create a great sports zone. News Topedu17 4 | Tip Top School Playgrounds Of 2017 | Creative PlayOasis Academy Ryelands

ABOUT

After developing their KS2 area, Oasis Academy Ryelands got back in contact with Creative Play in regards to transforming its KS1 area. A new school site, the existing tarmac area was completely empty and was a great blank canvas for us to work with. After Ryeland’s consultation, it became apparent that they wanted to create a quiet area that would include lots of seating as well as provide select play items that would encourage open-ended play.

Together we decided on a stage area, with numerous curved benches, ideal for both performing and spectating, during break and lesson times. Our Storytellers Area was also added to create an additional group space. Two Den-Making Teepees and Artificial Grass Safety Surfacing were included to enhance the rustic feel of the predominantly timber play equipment. Finally, a variety of seating and benches were provided to create lots of zones ideal for relaxing and socialising.

News Topedu17 6 | Tip Top School Playgrounds Of 2017 | Creative PlayNorwood Primary School

ABOUT

Wanting to develop their EYFS area in stages, Norwood Primary School got in touch with Creative Play in regards to kick-starting their project.
During Norwood Primary School’s consultation they confirmed that they wanted to create a fun roadway out of some sort of safety surfacing. After discussing what safety surfacing would be best for their individual needs, together we decided that a Artificial Grass area with a contrasting Colourplay roadway design would be ideal.
The contrast of the natural grass effect against the block colours would create a really crisp finish and show off the play features well, while also providing a tactile, all-weather play surface. Design details such as zebra crossings and lane lines we incorporated to provide additional prompts for imaginative play as well as aid road safety lessons.
Overall the final area looks great and we cannot wait to see how this projects unfolds in the future.

Outdoor gyms have been popping up in schools and parks around the country over the past decade as part of a nationwide initiative to make fitness both fun and accessible for all. Spending time in an outdoor school gym area on a regular basis offers a whole range of health and wellbeing benefits to children as they grow and develop. As well as encouraging students to be more active during their breaktimes, these easy-use fitness stations provide an ideal space for hosting dynamic PE lessons and sports training sessions.

If you’re thinking about embracing fresh air fitness at your school, then it’s essential to choose equipment pieces that are versatile enough to be used by different ages and ability levels. With so much choice now available when it comes to choosing outdoor gym equipment for schools, it can sometimes be hard to know where to begin. How To Get The Most From Your School Playground Equipment

Schools around the country are now realising the potential of their grounds and making a conscious effort to create outdoor spaces that support children’s learning and physical wellbeing. However, finding suitable school playground equipment can prove to be very challenging at times, especially if you’re working with a limited budget.

If you’re on the lookout for flexible play pieces that can cater to a range of ages and activities, then take a look at this guide. You’ll be surprised by how a few simple changes can help to improve your outdoor space and even boost positive behaviour amongst your pupils. Our team of playground experts are here to help you to get the most from your school playground items and make life at better for both students and teachers alike.

1. Utilise all of the space

Restricted and out-of-bounds areas tend to encourage misbehaviour on the schoolyard. You should identify any problem areas and think about how they could be turned into enjoyable child-friendly spaces. For example, a small plot of overgrown land that isn’t being used for anything could be cleared out and turned into a football pitch, a reading area or even a school garden. This way you can ensure that every area of your outdoor space has a function and that children are using it productively.

2. Combine sports areas

With childhood obesity and mental health issues at an all-time high in the UK, schools are now being urged to take a more proactive role in promoting healthy living for their pupils. Even if you’re stuck for space at your school, it’s still possible to facilitate a range of different sports without having to create a separate sports court for every activity.

Creative Play have helped many schools with smaller outdoor spaces to establish an enclosed MUGA (or multi-use games area) where children can take part in wide a range of sports during their break times and PE lessons. You can use our sports markings to create professional-looking pitches and courts, with the option to combine netball, basketball, tennis and many more sports all on the same court.

3. Have fun whatever the weather

Children in schools and nurseries are now spending less time outdoors than ever before. Try to get your pupils outside as much as possible during the school day, even on days when it’s raining. You’ll find that children are rarely phased by the weather as long as they have the correct clothing. With the right surfacing on your, you won’t have to worry about slips and falls either. Some of the best options for school playgrounds and sports courts include:

  • Wet pour safety surfacing
  •  Artificial grass
  • Rubber mulch safety surfacing

Creative Play offer a range of weather-resistant surfacing options that are designed to facilitate year-round use. All of our surfacing options are given a slip-resistant coating which makes them a lot less restrictive than grass.

4. Choose multifunctional equipment

Government cuts to school funding over the past few years have meant that a lot of schools are not in a position to invest in large and expensive pieces of school playground equipment. However, there are plenty of smaller sports items that are just as effective when it comes to engaging children and encouraging positive behaviour on the playground.

We offer a fantastic range of school sports equipment that includes everything from target panels and activity boards to outdoor gym equipment for a full workout. Take a look at our goal end with a built-in basketball net – just one item that would work perfectly in a MUGA where pupils can take part in football, netball and basketball all in the same space.

5. Zoning

Creating specific zones for each activity has been shown to affect playground behaviour by increasing physical activity, decreasing bullying and even reducing playground injuries. If you’re revamping your schoolyard, then don’t forget to include:

  • Quiet areas with sheltered seating
  • Nature areas with plants and flowers for sensory play
  • Active areas with grid games and play equipment such as beanbags, skipping ropes, cones and soft balls

Creative Play offer a wide selection of thermoplastic playground markings that are specifically designed to brighten up dull schoolyards with exciting games and activities. Depending on your preference for each zone, you can choose from fitness trails, hopscotch and snakes and ladders among many other grid games.

Creative Play have been designing and building school playground equipment for over 25 years. As industry-leaders, we’ve worked with hundreds of schools, colleges and nurseries around the country. If you’d like to improve the sports facilities at your school, then get in touch with our team today and we’ll book you in for a free consultation.

Firstly, our Jungle Climber Combi would provide physical challenges for the children to conquer and encourage the development of gross motor skills. Secondly, our impressive Pirate Ship Midi Timber worked well with Whitchurch Town Council’s request to incorporate a boat theme in reference to the park’s old Canal site heritage.
