FCC Communities Foundation Helps Bring New Inclusive Playground to Digby

Coloured Bar

Digby’s 20-year-old play area is set to be transformed into a new £87,000 inclusive community space thanks to support from the FCC Communities Foundation.

With the village’s population having grown significantly during that time, the new facility has been designed to better reflect the needs of the community. It will provide a modern, welcoming space where children of all ages and abilities can play together, while giving families a place to meet, socialise and spend time outdoors.

Installation is due to begin on 28 September and is expected to be completed by the end of October. Once the new playground has been signed off by an RPII-certified inspector, the council intends to host an official opening ceremony celebrating the new community facility.

Councillor Karen Groves said:

This is something we’ve been working towards for a long time. As a small Parish Council, replacing our ageing playground simply wasn’t something we could fund on our own, so securing support from the FCC Communities Foundation is fantastic news for the village. Their funding has made it possible for us to provide an inclusive play space that will benefit local children and families for many years to come.”

She added:

Over the past six or seven years the village has grown considerably, and the old playground no longer reflected the needs of our community. Creating a more inclusive space was a priority from the outset, ensuring children of all abilities can enjoy high-quality play opportunities close to home. With the primary school next door, the playground will also become a natural place for families to meet after school and help strengthen community life in Digby.”

The new play area has been carefully designed around two complementary play spaces: A fenced area for younger children, and a more active play zone featuring a wheelchair-accessible roundabout and adventure trail.

A bespoke Jigsaw Tower created especially for Digby Parish Council will form the centrepiece of the new play area. Featuring climbing elements and a slide, it will also provide a quieter space via under-platform seating.

The project will be delivered by Creative Play, with work expected to take around one month to complete.

Councillor Groves concluded:

“We’re incredibly grateful to the FCC Communities Foundation for believing in our project and helping us bring it to life. We can’t wait to see local children enjoying the new playground and look forward to welcoming everyone to the official opening later this year.”
