Colourful Inclusive Urban Playground With Towers And Nature Zone | Essex Primary School

Sheridan Road, London, London, E12 6QX

Coloured Bar

Located in Manor Park, East London, Essex Primary is a four-form entry school for children aged 3 to 11 and an autism spectrum disorder mission. With a vision to enhance their outdoor space, they partnered with Creative Play to introduce durable, educational play features while integrating natural elements into an urban setting.

See how we brought to life this colourful, fun, supportive playground that aligns with the school’s values:

  • A safe environment for physical development through responsible risk-taking and challenges that allow pupils to reach their full potential
  • Inclusive, sustainable features encouraging a connection with nature and a sense of ownership over the space
  • Create an environment showcasing an exciting converted bus / outdoor building
  • A colourful layout focused on enhancing learning and social interaction
  • Stimulating equipment designed to build pupil confidence

ESSEX PRIMARY SCHOOL

Essex Primary School caters to nearly 1,000 students, including up to 120 pupils per year group, and over 150 nursery places. With four expansive playgrounds, the school’s outdoor spaces must balance low maintenance with the ability to withstand the high demand of active playtimes. Inclusivity is key, particularly for students in the school’s ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) educational programme, who are fully integrated into mainstream classes.

Customer Objective

The school’s aim was to create a space that offers play features to children of all abilities for stimulation, physical and cognitive development, and an introduction to the natural world.

Consultation

To see how we could help bring their vision to life, Creative Play sent a play expert to discuss their needs and assess the site. Upon observation they concluded that although the project was possible, there would be challenges to overcome. Taking all the difficulties into consideration, our play advisor estimated a 3 month timetable for completing work, which was convenient to the school’s deadline.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS: INCLUSIVITY, NATURE, & SURFACING

State Of Area Before Installation

  • An existing outdoor spectacle – an old bus renovated into an outbuilding
  • Several large areas of varying shapes and sizes stretching around a MUGA
  • Tired tarmac yard next to a long stretch of unkempt grass but with no flooding or subsidence issues

Our designers were able to take the play advisor’s site survey and assess how best to make use of the expansive space. Following discussion with the school, they concluded the area would be served well by a variety of ground markings for educational play, a couple of tower systems for more challenging and thrilling experiences, and multiple sensory and imaginative items for maximising inclusivity.

In addition to this, contributing to the desired nature-aspect of the playground everyone agreed adding planters, animal attractions, and an allotment would serve this need.

Access Restrictions

A reconnaissance of the school found that delivery and installation would be limited by the restrictive access offered by a single 3.5 metre gate for some of the work, but nothing that couldn’t be overcome by taking a little bit more time.

Playground Surfacing & Creating A Colourful Space

Trees and decking had the potential to impede the laying of new surfacing, but just meant a slower, skilled hand would be required when working in their vicinity. Consultation led to the decision to use artificial grass and EPDM wetpour for surfacing, a durable and safe choice which can be laid strategically around obstacles while offering a multitude of colours. It is also a safety necessity within the vicinity of taller play structures.

This type of surfacing would also easily accommodate a variety of playground markings for maximising play value across wide open spaces. A woodland colour rubber mulch could cater to the wildlife section.

Timber Play Equipment

While a couple of elements will need to feature metal (an in-ground trampoline and a solar shade), in the interests of sustainability and bringing a natural aesthetic to the urban space, everything else can be timber-based (with a smattering of recycled plastic), including planters and waterplay equipment.

IMPLEMENTATION: REALISING A LARGE AND COLOURFUL MULTI-PURPOSE SPACE

Design

Creative Play have added other elements to Essex Primary School over the years. These include an inclusive spinner, an outdoor classroom, and a jungle climber. Eager to retain the high-bar for quality, our designers were keen to deliver everything the school had requested. This meant sensory play panels which would have a broad appeal, but be of particular interest to pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The same approach was used for deciding upon the inclusion of a waterplay area and an in-ground trampoline, both of which were situated in a separate enclosed area for stricter supervision.

We reserved a spot specifically for the nature elements of the playground – a squirrel maze, bug hotel, planters, and an allotment – but maintained a timber aesthetic wherever possible to continue the theme – seating, picnic tables, play towers.

Installation

The entire project, which included a lot of time-consuming surfacing work, took approximately 8 weeks. It was overseen by a dedicated Creative Play Project Manager, who acted as the lead installation expert and main point of contact, ensuring a seamless process from start to finish.

In line with our standard procedure, the site was securely fenced throughout installation and remained enclosed until an independent post-installation inspection was carried out by an RPII (Register of Playground Inspectors International) certified inspector. Only once the site was confirmed to meet the rigorous safety standards of BSEN 1176 and BSEN 1177 was it opened for use by school children.

RESULTS: LARGE SCALE PLAY AREA OFFERING VARIETY TO ALL CHILDREN

Essex Primary’s play area has been completely transformed from a cold, uninspiring expanse of grey into a vibrant playscape bursting with colour and activity. Multi-coloured ground markings invite children to race, jump, and move, while designated zones encourage different types of play – from high-energy games to quiet reflection.

Colour-coded areas provide clear visual cues, guiding children toward activities that suit their energy levels and interests. With dedicated quiet spaces and sheltered sections, children with sensory sensitivities can find a place that helps them feel comfortable and in control – reducing anxiety and stress.

With over 20 enhancements made to the site, the result is a dynamic, inclusive play environment that supports physical activity, cognitive development, and a deeper connection to the natural world. Hundreds of children now have the space and variety they need to play, explore, and thrive every day.

Maintenance & Future Opportunities

Essex Primary’s playground is designed for long-term durability with low-maintenance, weather-resistant equipment that can withstand daily use by hundreds of children. To make upkeep even easier, every installation comes with a comprehensive operations and maintenance manual, along with a range of aftercare packages from Creative Play – ensuring the play area remains safe, vibrant, and ready for years of fun.

Replacing or adding parts to the colossal six-tower Denali play structure is effortless thanks to its exclusive modular design. Want to replace a guard rail with a net climber? No problem! This flexibility not only simplifies maintenance but also allows for easy expansion in the future, ensuring the play area can grow to accommodate more children as needed.
