Government’s £18m Playground Cash Boost: How API Standards Can Help

API Advice On England’s Playground Investment News

A major shift in national play policy is underway. At this year’s budget the government announced £18 million to revitalise 200 play parks across England, with funding targeted at the most deprived communities. This investment aims to reverse a decade-long decline in public play spaces, following the closure of over 400 playgrounds since 2012 (Raising The Nation Play Commission, 2025).

The Association of Play Industries (API) has welcomed the Chancellor’s Budget announcement, but stresses that investment alone isn’t enough. They urge councils to ensure that projects are delivered by accredited, accountable suppliers, backed by independent standards, transparent practices and long-term sustainability commitments.

Redressing The Balance For Council Playgrounds

Industry voices have quickly highlighted the significance of the government’s decision. Eugene Minogue, Executive Director of Play England, described the commitment as a ‘clear signal that play is finally back on the government’s radar’, noting that research with the University of Sheffield exposes ‘how unequal playground provision is across England, with children in deprived areas having far fewer places to play’. He suggests this could mark the start of lasting change for communities that have been historically underserved.

At the same time, Labour MP Tom Hayes, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group On Play (APPG), reflected on how neglected the issue has been at national level. ‘Until this year’, he said, ‘MPs hadn’t debated playgrounds for eight years’. His comments underline the scale of the opportunity now facing local authorities – for the first time in almost a decade, play has political momentum.

How Council Playgrounds Can Maximise Cash Boost

The API’s recommendations provide a practical framework for making sure your one-off investment is translated into a long-term gain. These include:

  • Prioritising accredited suppliers who meet industry standards and deliver accountable, evidence-based design. Like Creative Play, they should adhere to strict quality and safety codes such as BSEN 1176, BSEN 1177, and ISO9001.
  • Ensuring inclusive and accessible provision, addressing the need for access to all children. Discover more in this Creative Play article about inclusive playground design.
  • Planning for long-term sustainability, ensuring public money delivers durable, low-maintenance spaces for years to come. Visit the Creative Play blog to learn why sustainable playgrounds are so important.

Creative Play is already aligned with every aspect of the API’s approach, from designing inclusive environments and providing comprehensive maintenance strategies, to manufacturing in the UK with fully accountable quality processes. For councils preparing bids or planning upcoming projects, this alignment means fewer risks, stronger compliance and clearer long-term value.

With fresh funding now available and national attention firmly on public play spaces, councils have a timely opportunity to deliver high-quality, inclusive playgrounds that stand the test of time.
