What Is An Inclusive Playground?

An inclusive playground is one where every child, regardless of age, background or ability, can safely enjoy and benefit from play. The design understands and responds to different needs – from mobility issues to sensory processing disorders… and beyond.

Since the COVID-19 lockdowns, 46% of people in England have reported spending more time outdoors, with 35% visiting local green spaces more often (The People And Nature Survey, Gov.uk).

Why Inclusive Playground Design Matters For People With Disabilities

The Equality Act 2010 defines disability as ‘a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term negative effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities’. Creative Play’s aim is to exceed legal requirements and design playgrounds which support every child.

Because playgrounds help reduce loneliness and isolation, especially for disabled and elderly populations, outdoor spaces have become crucial for mental wellbeing, particularly since the pandemic.

Although not all are visible impairments, 11% of children in the UK are affected by disability (UK Disability Statistics: Prevalence and Life Experiences, Commons Library, 2023). Mobility is a problem for 16% of these children, 50% have social/behavioural problems and 30% have mental health problems (UK Disability Statistics).

Did You Know?

Around 1% of people in the UK have autism, (widely believed to be an underestimated figure), so playgrounds need to cater for their different needs to ensure full participation (BeyondAutism.org).

Why Inclusive Playground Design Is Important For All Ages

Inclusivity extends beyond access for children. Playgrounds must also accommodate the 23% of UK adults with disabilities, and the 45% of people over the state pension age who have disabilities. These people need clear access to playgrounds so they can comfortably interact with children in these spaces, regardless of the disability status of their offspring (UK Disability Statistics).

And when it comes to adults, it isn’t just those with disabilities that need to feel welcomed. Intergenerational playgrounds encourage interaction between young and old, to the benefit of both. Older adults who engage in play with a child experience improved mood, reduced loneliness and better health. By creating play spaces accommodating of all ages, you can promote physical, psychological and social health benefits for the entire community.

Create Inclusive Playgrounds That Benefit Child Development

Balance & Movement: Playgrounds not catering for different needs are denying some children developmental opportunities. Activities that challenge proprioception, such as monkey bars and balance beams, help improve balance and coordination. Vestibular senses, crucial for understanding movement and spatial orientation, are stimulated by play equipment such as basket swings and spinners.

Tactile Senses: Equally important is a sense of touch, essential for cognitive development. Children with visual impairments, autism and other challenges can benefit greatly from tactile components. Different textures and natural elements such as sand / water / grass provide alternative routes to accessible sensory experiences.

Sound & Vision: These features can help prevent vision problems while also supporting language and social development, particularly for children with learning difficulties, who are statistically more likely to suffer such problems. Musical elements / anything using natural light (which many visually impaired people can ‘see’) are also great additions.

Challenging ‘The Standard’: Designing Inclusive Playgrounds For Gender & Ethnic Diversity

Designing for inclusivity challenges the notion of a ‘default’ user and ensures that playgrounds are welcoming to everyone, from various age groups, genders, and cultural backgrounds. It’s about providing access to outdoor play equipment for everyone – partly by making them feel the space is safe.

Teenage girls, for example (who are statistically absent from playgrounds compared to teenage boys, partly because they don’t feel comfortable), tend to benefit from visible, elevated sections that provide a wide view of the area and opportunities for social interaction. The same design attitude can encourage use by culturally diverse groups, too.

Additionally, by collaborating with communities throughout the development process and integrating meaningful cultural aesthetics, inclusive design can effectively bridge cultural divides.
