Water Play – How can it benefit you?

Coloured Bar

Water Play is a fantastic activity for children as it is open ended and provides the opportunity for extended learning.

Water play encourages learning in all developmental areas. It provides opportunities for children to experiment with math and science concepts, strengthen their physical skills, advance their social and emotional skills, and enhance language development (Crosser, 1994; Hendrick, 1996).

Physical Development

When using water play children use their muscles when lifting buckets, fitting funnels, pouring water and transporting materials – even when cleaning up! Water play also encourages the development of eye/hand coordination through pouring, squeezing, transporting, stirring and squirting. Sensory experiences are widened through experimenting with various textures and temperatures.

Problem Solving Skills

As children manipulate water play materials, they begin to understand why and how things happen. Tasks such as sinking and floating objects and transporting water through various channels encourage children to experiment and learn through trial and error.

Math and Science

Incorporating different materials in water play can allow for a series of mathematical and scientific concepts to be built. Empty/full, less/more, shallow/deep, light/heavy, float/sink. These concepts lead to questions, challenge and intrigue. Children engage in both inductive and deductive thinking as they explore the properties of water. Principles such as the effect of gravity, force and change in state can all be discovered through water play activities.

Creative Development

Water play encourages children to try out ideas and discover solutions to various problems in a safe environment. It allows children the freedom to use their imaginations and be inventive when given the opportunity to engage in free play.

Social Development

When experimenting with water play children build and develop their communication and social skills. In order to be successful they must cooperate, negotiate and communicate effectively with their classmates. Children also learn to share equipment, space and materials.
