Creating an Inclusive SEN Playground at St George's Primary School, Portland, Dorset

St George's Primary School has enhanced its outdoor play provision with the creation of a new SEN playground, providing an inclusive space where every child can play, learn and thrive.

Designed to support pupils with a wide range of needs, the playground features a wheelchair-inclusive roundabout, the Cambridge Sensory Tunnel, and a selection of sensory play boards and interactive equipment. Together, these elements encourage exploration, physical activity, imaginative play and social interaction in a safe and accessible environment.

The bespoke playground promotes confidence, independence, balance, coordination and sensory development, while encouraging children of all abilities to play together. The result is a vibrant outdoor space that supports inclusive learning, wellbeing and positive play experiences for every pupil.

Project Objectives

The school wanted to create an inclusive outdoor environment that would support pupils with a wide range of needs, encouraging physical activity, sensory exploration, imaginative play and social interaction. The aim was to provide a safe, accessible space where every child could enjoy meaningful outdoor play.

Design Challenges & Solutions

The playground was carefully designed to maximise accessibility and play value within the available space. A combination of inclusive and sensory equipment, including a wheelchair-inclusive roundabout, the Cambridge Sensory Tunnel, and interactive sensory play boards, was selected to create a welcoming environment that promotes exploration, communication and independent play.

An Inclusive Space for Play and Learning

The completed SEN playground has transformed the school's outdoor provision, giving pupils an engaging space to build confidence, develop physical and social skills, and enjoy sensory-rich play experiences. The accessible design encourages children of all abilities to play together, creating a vibrant environment that supports wellbeing, inclusion and outdoor learning throughout the school day.
