Strategic Playground Design That Enhances Visitor Flow and Dwell Time | Dudley Zoo And Castle

Castle Hill, Dudley, West Midlands, DY1 4QF

Coloured Bar

Dudley Zoo & Castle commissioned Creative Play to redevelop two areas within the attraction into play zones, with the aim of enhancing the family experience and encouraging visitors to pause and spend longer in specific areas. Working within a live zoo environment, the project required careful coordination, durable materials, and a design approach that supported visitor flow. The result is two engaging play destinations that add value to the visitor journey while integrating naturally into the landscape.

DUDLEY ZOO AND CASTLE

A major UK visitor attraction, Dudley Zoo & Castle welcome families throughout the year to explore wildlife, heritage, and landscaped grounds. Alongside its conservation and education work, the Zoo continually invests in facilities that improve the visitor experience and encourage longer, more enjoyable stays.

Customer Objective

The Zoo wanted to strengthen a key area of the attraction located close to picnic seating and nearby food outlets, creating a more compelling reason for families to pause and spend time there as part of their visit.

At the same time, they were looking to introduce a visually impressive, unsupervised play attraction that would deliver a genuine “wow-factor” while aligning with the heritage and character of the site. The equipment needed to feel bold and memorable, complement the presence of the historic castle, and withstand the demands of a busy, high-footfall environment.

Consultation

Creative Play’s Outdoor Play Expert Simon met with the Zoo team on site to discuss objectives, assess existing conditions, and understand operational requirements. Following five separate successful collaborations over the past decade, Dudley Zoo & Castle were confident in inviting Creative Play back to redevelop these new areas. The consultation focused on safety, durability, access, and how the play areas could support visitor movement and dwell behaviour.

We talked a lot about creating a castle play structure that lived up to the setting. With a real castle as part of the attraction, the play needed to feel bold, exciting and full of action, something children would instantly recognise and remember as part of their day out” – Simon, Creative Play

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS: REPURPOSING AN EXISTING SPACE

State Of Area Before Installation

  • Grass and loose stone surfaces
  • Slopes within the installation zones
  • Boulders, fencing, hedges, and loose items within the footprint
  • Hosting an animal enclosure
  • Visitor routes surrounding the area

Coordinating closely with the zoo, we made sure they had arranged for all boulders, internal fencing, existing timber structures, hedges, picnic tables, and other loose items to be removed ahead of installation. A landscaping contractor levelled the grass slopes where required.

A New Chapter For A Familiar Space

One of the play areas was previously home to the Zoo’s Red-neck wallabies. To enable the redevelopment, the Red-neck wallabies were carefully relocated elsewhere within the Zoo (sorry, Barney, Bessie, Rupert and Roo!).

The idea of repurposing the space is to open opportunities for families to pause at a destination point, rather than at a transitional route, supporting dwell time around nearby food outlets and enhancing the overall visitor journey.

“It needed to become a spot for children to let off some energy, to climb, balance, and explore, while parents take a breather. The zoo required this natural stopping point within the wider visitor journey” explains Simon. “The wallabies have since settled comfortably into their new home, and the space they vacated is now working hard in a new and valuable way“.

Playground Surfacing

Where possible, equipment was chosen to retain play value while keeping potential fall heights to a minimum, allowing some existing surfacing to remain. This reduced excavation while maintaining BSEN 1177 safety compliance.

Choosing The Right Equipment

Across the two areas, a mix of adventurous and themed equipment was installed, including:

All timber equipment is supported in part by durable recycled green Playtec plastic.

IMPLEMENTATION: FROM ANIMAL ENCLOSURE TO FAMILY PLAY SPACE

Site access was strong, with tarmac routes suitable for delivery vehicles. Works were carefully planned to minimise disruption to visitors and surrounding operations, achieved largely by erecting barriers in key areas.

The project was delivered simultaneously across two distinct areas – the Dudley Zoo Play Zone and the Sand Beach Playtown Area – located either side of a central transitional route. Following client-led clearance and landscaping, Creative Play completed foundation works and extended the lifespan of the timber equipment by mounting each structure on durable metal post shoes.

With no drainage or manhole obstructions to contend with, excavation was straightforward, allowing installation to be completed within two weeks across February and March. The finished play areas were independently inspected by an RPII-qualified inspector and certified ready for use in April.

RESULTS: LANDMARK FAMILY DESTINATION WITHIN THE ATTRACTION

The redevelopment has introduced a distinctive play presence for over 300,000 annual visitors within a key area of the Zoo, helping to anchor foot traffic and create a natural gathering point for families.

The castle-led design delivers strong visual impact, reinforcing the attraction’s identity while giving children an active, memorable experience. Positioned close to picnic seating and refreshment facilities, the space now supports a more relaxed pace in this part of the site, encouraging families to linger and make fuller use of the surrounding amenities.

Constructed from durable materials suited to a high-footfall environment, the installation is designed for long-term performance, ensuring the play areas continue to add value to the visitor experience for years to come.

Maintenance & Future Opportunities

Happy with their install, the zoo has already been discussing possible further projects…

Thanks to Creative Play’s exclusive Jigsaw modular design, the playground can be easily expanded or adapted in the future, allowing the attraction to evolve the space as their needs change.
