Early Intervention Through Play: Why Inclusive SEND Playgrounds Matter More Than Ever

Designing Playgrounds To Shape Behaviour, Relationships, & Readiness To Learn

The Minister for Children and Families, Josh MacAlister, highlighted the need for SEND in education to ‘shift support earlier on, so schools, perhaps even without a diagnosis, can provide support… so children can be included and part of the classroom’.

Speaking to Nick Ferrari on LBC, his message came during a discussion about delays to the government’s SEND white paper, but the real takeaway for schools is clear – early intervention matters.

Teachers across the country are seeing more pupils struggling with social interaction and emotional regulation since COVID, with MacAlister noting that ‘many children lost the capacity to socialise, learn how to get on with other people’.

It’s a challenge that becomes more serious over time – secondary school SEND pupils are more than twice as likely to be placed in isolation rooms as schools struggle to manage unmet emotional and behavioural needs.

How Specialist SEND Playground Design Prepares School Pupils for the Future

At Key Stages 1 and 2, children are still learning how to communicate, collaborate, and manage emotions – and this is where early support makes the biggest difference. Purposefully designed outdoor SEN play equipment provides a practical way to develop these skills every day, in a setting that feels natural and enjoyable.

Through play, children learn how to share, take turns, and problem-solve together. Inclusive playgrounds encourage teamwork, build confidence, and give every child, regardless of ability, a chance to succeed. Over time, this helps regulate behaviour, strengthen relationships, and lay the foundations for future success both in and out of the classroom.

While national SEND reform may be on hold, schools don’t have to wait to make change happen. Creative Play design and install inclusive SEN outdoor play equipment that supports emotional development, positive behaviour, and social growth – ensuring every child can thrive.
