Moss Bank School wanted to enhance its outdoor space with a varied range of play and recreational facilities, creating an engaging environment where pupils could be active, develop physical skills, explore and enjoy different types of outdoor play.
The aim was to introduce a combination of active, challenging and interactive play opportunities, while making the most of the available space. The new development provides pupils with a versatile outdoor environment that supports physical activity, social interaction, exploration and play throughout the school day.
The challenge was to create a versatile outdoor space offering a variety of activities within one cohesive design. Careful planning and positioning of the equipment allowed different areas of the playground to provide opportunities for sports, physical challenge, imaginative play and sensory exploration.
A key feature of the development is the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), which has been designed to offer a range of sporting opportunities. It includes mini targets, a goal trainer and two goal ends with integrated basketball hoops, allowing pupils to enjoy different games and activities within one dedicated space.
Alongside the MUGA, a selection of climbing, swinging and interactive equipment adds further variety, creating a space where pupils can choose activities that suit their interests and abilities.
The completed outdoor space has created a dynamic and varied environment where pupils can be active, develop physical skills, challenge themselves and enjoy different forms of play.
The MUGA provides a dedicated area for sports and active play, with mini targets, a goal trainer, two goal ends and integrated basketball hoops offering multiple ways to get involved. The Janga Play Tower introduces opportunities for climbing, movement and exploration, while the Alps Traverse Wall provides a physical challenge that encourages coordination, balance and confidence.
The Basket Swing adds another opportunity for active and social play, while the selection of interactive playboards, including the Rainwheel, Chimes and Drum Kit, introduces sensory and creative elements to the playground.
Together, the new facilities have created a versatile outdoor environment that encourages pupils to move, explore, interact and have fun, with a varied selection of activities designed to support different interests and abilities.
