Greener Spaces, Happier Faces: Why Sustainable Playgrounds Matter

Playgrounds are more than just places for children to run, climb, and explore – they’re vital community hubs that encourage physical activity, social interaction, and creativity. But as the world focuses on addressing climate change and sustainability, the playground industry also needs to step up.

Sustainable playgrounds are emerging as an innovative solution for reducing environmental impact while providing enriching play experiences.

How To Make A Sustainable Playground

A sustainable playground focuses on reducing its ecological footprint through thoughtful design, materials, and construction processes. Key elements include:

  • Recycled Materials: A sustainable playground uses recycled materials such as plastics to create durable and environmentally friendly play equipment. Amongst other elements, Creative Play employ PCR Play-Tec plastic, which is 80% recycled and 100% recyclable.
  • Natural Features: Incorporating native plants, timber, sand and water encourages children to connect with nature while reducing reliance on artificial materials. While water and sand may not be suitable to every play area, we always consider the surrounding environment when designing playground layouts – and since Creative Play’s primary material is timber, our play equipment frequently fits naturally with its outdoor surroundings.
  • Eco-Friendly Surfacing: Grass mats are the best option for blending a playground’s surface into its’ surroundings, but for safety issues rubberised surfacing is often required. To lessen the impact on the environment, Creative Play use a rubber material made from recycled tyres.
  • Carbon Emissions: The sustainability of a playground isn’t limited to the materials on display in the product, but also the processes that go into making it. Companies manufacturing play areas should do so with a minimum impact to the environment. Since 2023 Creative Play have been making efforts towards reaching Net Zero carbon emissions, and are on course to reducing C02e by 50% for 2031.
  • Waste Management: Discarding excess material or byproducts of the production process contribute significantly to environmental impact, and any playground aiming to be sustainable needs to have correctly disposed of waste. As of 2024 over 90% of Creative Play’s waste is recycled, which includes office plastics, production off-cuts and even sawdust.

What Are The Benefits Of A Sustainable Playground?

Being better for the planet is reason enough to opt for a sustainable playground, but they do provide other significant benefits for children and communities too:

  1. Teaching Environmental Responsibility: Playgrounds built with sustainability in mind teach children and their families the importance of protecting the environment. Seeing recycled materials and natural designs sparks conversations about conservation and normalises green attitudes.
  2. Encouraging Outdoor Play: Natural designs are visually inviting, drawing children and adults alike to spend more time outdoors and feel connections with nature, even when they are miles from the countryside.
  3. Healthier Spaces: Materials used in sustainable playgrounds don’t contain harmful chemicals, ensuring safer play spaces.
  4. Community Pride: Sustainable playgrounds often become a source of local pride, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship.

Case Study: The Impact Of A Sustainable Playground

Honeysuckle Close, Saltash, features eco-friendly materials and designs.

Sustainable timber swing frame, benches, table, and tower with elements of 80% recycled plastic (which is 100% recyclable), all made in Britain to minimise fuel burning.

By using sustainably sourced timber and low-impact surfacing (grass mats), the project successfully reduced its environmental footprint while creating inclusive play spaces for children. Community feedback highlighted the value of investing in a greener future that also supports local families.

Should the council ever consider extending the play area in future, their exclusive Creative Play Jigsaw Tower makes it easier and more cost effective. This modular system, – they opted for a single tower with a slide and a ramp – allows for a wide variety of additional pieces to be added at any time with minimal disruption, so if they ever want to add a net climber or other part, it could be included without tearing out the entire structure.

How To Incorporate Sustainability Into Your Next Playground

If you’re considering a new playground project, sustainability doesn’t have to mean compromise. Here are some practical ways to ensure your space is eco-friendly:

  • Work with Experts: Partner with playground providers who prioritise sustainable design and manufacturing.
  • Repurpose Existing Spaces: Instead of starting from scratch, retrofit existing play areas with modern, eco-friendly equipment. Is it time your playground had an upgrade?
  • Prioritise Longevity: Choose durable materials that withstand heavy use and weather, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Creative Play are so confident in their upright timbers that they come with a 20-year guarantee against infestation and rot.
  • Involve the Community: Ask families for input on the design. This ensures the playground meets their needs while encouraging a sense of ownership – a play area subject to regular use is never a waste!
  • Secure Green Funding: Many organisations offer grants for sustainable community projects. See if you qualify.
