Two New EYFS Play Areas at St Laurence Church Infant School, Birmingham

St Laurence Church Infant School in Birmingham has enhanced its outdoor provision with two new EYFS play areas, designed to encourage curiosity, creativity and hands-on learning through outdoor play.

Both areas provide opportunities for younger children to explore, develop their physical skills and use their imaginations in an engaging outdoor environment. A sandbox encourages sensory exploration and creative play, while a range of playboards supports interactive learning and discovery.

The addition of a bug hotel and bird hotel also introduces opportunities for children to learn about nature and wildlife, encouraging curiosity about the natural world and the importance of looking after the environment.

Together, these new facilities create welcoming outdoor spaces where children can learn through play, develop new skills and enjoy a variety of early years experiences.

Playground Development Challenges & Solutions

The key challenge was to create two engaging early years areas that offer a variety of play and learning opportunities. This was addressed by bringing together different features to support sensory discovery, creativity, interaction and nature-based learning.

The combination of water play, sand play, interactive playboards and wildlife features provides a varied outdoor environment where children can explore at their own pace, develop new skills and learn through play.
