Transforming Outdoor Play at St Gilbert’s CofE Primary School

St Gilbert’s CofE Primary School has transformed its old playground, turning a tired tarmac space into an exciting and engaging outdoor environment for pupils to explore, play and enjoy.

The redesigned playground features a varied range of equipment, including a Jungle Climber Voyager, Timber Sandbox with Sliding Lid, Water and Sand Play with Rotating Pulley and Bucket, Water Wall and Inclusive Playhouses. These new additions bring together physical challenge, sensory exploration and imaginative play, creating a more varied and stimulating space for children.

The transformation has made a real difference to the outdoor area, providing pupils with more opportunities to get active, explore new experiences and enjoy different types of play throughout the school day.

Customer Objectives

St Gilbert’s CofE Primary School wanted to make better use of its existing playground, replacing the large expanse of tarmac with a more purposeful area that would encourage children to spend time outdoors.

The brief focused on introducing different types of equipment to suit a range of interests, from climbing and physical challenges to hands-on activities involving water, sand and imaginative role-play. The goal was to create a more versatile setting that would make outdoor time more rewarding for pupils.

Playground Development Challenges & Solutions

The main challenge was to make better use of the existing playground, creating a more functional and varied outdoor environment without relying on one type of activity. The development needed to cater to different interests while ensuring the space worked for everyday school use.

The solution focused on introducing a balance of active play, creative activities and practical features. Alongside opportunities for climbing, sensory exploration and imaginative play, freestanding exercise blocks offer additional ways for pupils to keep active, while the chalkboard and whiteboard support creativity outdoors. A dedicated trike store also provides convenient storage, helping the school make the most of its outdoor facilities.

By combining these different elements, the development has given the school a more versatile playground, with facilities that support a wider range of activities throughout the day.
