Creating Two New Play Areas to Support Outdoor Play at Forest View Primary School
The school in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, has introduced two new outdoor play areas tailored to different stages of play. An EYFS area combines climbing and balancing equipment with colourful wetpour surfacing, while the playing field features additional climbing challenges designed to encourage movement and exploration.
Project Highlights
-
EYFS Play Area: Features a Jungle Climber Voyager, balance beam and four stepping logs.
-
Colourful Safety Surfacing: Blue and black wetpour completes the EYFS area.
-
Playing Field: A separate area provides more opportunities for active outdoor play.
-
Jungle Climber Midi: Introduces climbing challenges to the playing field.
-
Overhead Ladder: Encourages pupils to develop upper-body strength, coordination and confidence.
The new play areas offer additional opportunities to incorporate outdoor activity into the school day.
Customer Objectives
The project created two distinct play spaces to provide pupils with varied outdoor experiences, from early-years exploration and balance activities to more challenging climbing and upper-body movement.
Playground Development Challenges & Solutions
The key consideration was creating outdoor play opportunities suited to pupils at different stages of their development. By dedicating space to EYFS play and introducing separate provision on the playing field, the school can offer a more varied outdoor environment. The two areas were planned with different types of physical activity in mind, helping make better use of the school’s outdoor space while catering for a broader range of play experiences.
